Rehabilitation of Elbow Injuries

چکیده

Introduction The elbow functions to facilitate positioning of the hand in space; it serves as a mechanical lever through the forearm for lifting and as a means of force transmission. Motion at the joint is a combination of flexion extension and pronosupination that facilitates activities of daily living. Trauma to the elbow can be challenging to treat. The anatomy is complex and stability of the joint may be compromised by injury to the bones, ligaments and soft tissue which confer stability. Moreover, the articular surfaces are unforgiving of small defects or mal-alignment and the elbow has an unfortunate tendency towards stiffness following trauma and or immobilization. Thus, rehabilitation following elbow injuries can be a challenge.

Rehabilitation of the thrower's elbow.

The elbow joint is frequently injured in the overhead athlete, due to the large amount of forces in throwing. Injuries often occur due to repetitive microtrauma, especially in pitching. Rehabilitation following injury or surgery is vital to fully restore normal elbow function and return the athlete to competition as quickly and safely as possible. Elbow rehabilitation must follow a progressive ...

Elbow injuries to the throwing athlete.

Elbow injuries in the throwing athlete are common. Because of the tremendous medial tensile forces and lateral compressive forces borne by the elbow, there is a wide array of injuries that occur. A detailed history and physical examination are necessary for an accurate diagnosis. Many of the injuries discussed can be treated successfully with conservative measures followed by aggressive physica...

Rehabilitation of the Overhead Athlete’s Elbow

The activities required during overhead sports, particularly during baseball pitching, produce large forces at the elbow joint. Injuries to the elbow joint frequently occur in the overhead athlete because of the large amount of forces observed during the act of throwing, playing tennis, or playing golf. Injuries may result because of repetitive overuse, leading to tissue failure. Rehabilitation...
